Affordable fastrak to a First Officer position on superyachts
Do you already have the practical and theory skills to a level of competency of Inshore Skipper (click here to review these skills) and have had some time onboard a yacht at sea as an active crew member?
If you do, the Superyacht Crew Academy Fastrak Mates and Miles programme will help you obtain the required credentials for a crew position on a superyacht in the fastest, and most economical way.
Superyacht Crew Academy has designed this course to streamline your attainment of the qualifications for the IYT Mate 200gt certification.
This programme provides the required training and experience so you can apply for the IYT Mate 200 gt (Master of Yachts Coastal) Certificate (MCA recognised) .
Prerequisites
To join this programme you must be over 18 years old and have the practical and theory skills to a level of competency of Inshore Skipper including basic navigation and colregs. Click here to review these standards.
You must also have some time at sea as an active member of a the crew. If you do not have these skills you should consider taking the complete Fastrak programme with no entry requirements.
The Fastrak Mates and Miles course is a tightly organised and streamlined programme combining the:
- 6 day Mate 200gt course
- 12 day mile builder (to gain the 800 sea miles required for the Mates ticket)
- STCW95 course
- Marine Radio Certification
The Mate 200 gt (Master of Yachts Coastal) Certificate
This programme will provide you with the qualifications for First Mate certification for commercial vessels and super yachts up to 200 tons, up to 150 miles offshore.
The First Mate (also called the First Officer on some yachts) works closely with the Captain, Engineer, Deck & Interior Crew, to maintain the superyacht in top form. The Mate is expected to undertake and supervise boat detailing, outboard engine maintenance, navigation & boat handling, safe fuelling of the vessel and other duties as needed.
The First Mate is expected to have a sound understanding and appreciation of yacht etiquette and is generally also responsible for assisting guests; helping them board and leave the vessel on tenders or the wharf, assisting with water sport activities, and responding to the various needs and requests of the owners and their guests.
The First Mate oversees the activities of the Bosun, if the yacht is large enough to require one, and the deckhands.
The Mates & Miles Course Itinerary
Sea Training Live aboard includes :
- IYT Mate 200gt Practical, Theory, and Exam
- 12 Day Mile Builder - at least 800 nautical miles to meet the requirements for Mate 200gt.

How long is the programme?
Sea Training – 18 days live aboard
Shore Based – 6 days
Please note that partaking in and completing the programme does not give you a guarantee of passing the exam. We will teach you everything you need to know to pass, but actually passing the exam depends on you, your performance and the amount of study you are prepared to put in.

Location of Sailing
All practical inshore sail training will be sailed within the waterways of the Pittwater and the lower Hawkesbury region. This waterway is flanked by the Kuringai National Park boasting lush green sub tropical vegetation and secluded sandy beaches. For more details on the cruising area click here.
All offshore milebuilders will sail from Pittwater north or south along the east coast of New South Wales .
Location of shore based training
The shore based training will be conducted at the Superyacht Crew Academy's training facility at Newport.
Accommodation and meals
Accommodation and delicious healthy meals during the onboard sail training and milebuilders are included in the fastrak course. Meals during leisure time are at your own expense.
During the shore based training, you must provide your own accommodation. Local youth hostels, situated close by to the Superyacht Crew Academy, provide affordable nightly rates.
Booking Conditions
To gain the maximum benefit and continuity of training from the Fastrak program, it is recommended that you book into consecutive course modules, however they may be undertaken individually, providing there is a place available on the preferred module. If you already have some of these qualifications you do not have to take them again and will be credited with the cost of the modules.
Travel/medical insurance is recommended and compulsory to safeguard you against the misfortune of having to cancel your course. Cancellation fees are enforced by Club Sail as per the terms and conditions of booking stated on the booking form. To secure your booking a 50% deposit is required upon confirmation of the course. The balance of payment is to be settled no later than 14 days prior to course commencement. There are no refunds due to cancellation inside 14 days.
