International Yacht Training Passport

If you plan to charter a boat or to have insurance for your own boat, it pays to have internationally recognised training and certification. Plus, of course, competent training could save the day in the event of an emergency at sea.

International Yacht Training Inc. (IYT) is the world's leading provider of yacht training services - both recreational and professional. IYT provides a stardardised approach to Yacht Training globally and has established a partnership programme with the Superyacht Training Academy (a division of Club Sail Ltd.) to offer IYT courses in Australia.

25 countries accept IYT commercial and recreational Yacht Training Certificates of Competency. These countries include all red flag countries (UK, Jersey, Guernsey, Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Gibraltar, British Virgin Islands etc. ) and New Zealand, Ireland, Bahamas, Marshall Islands, Luxembourg and Australia.

The Internationally recognised Classification Society Det Norkse Veritas (DNV) recognises IYT as a Maritime Training Center.

The Training Programmes

IYT has developed a modular programme to allow you to learn and develop the skills needed to run a power or sailing boat from absolute beginner to IYT Yacht Training Ocean. The modules can be taken singularly or in groups depending on the time you have available. IYT recommends, however, that any one course should be completed within a period of two years.

IYT Certificates

There are two levels of certifications:

1. Module Completion Seals and Certificates of Satisfactory Course Completion (for Modules 1 to 17)

On successful completion of each module, the Superyacht Crew Academy will sign and affix a seal to the bottom of each module in the IYT International Yachting Passport logbook. When you complete all the modules for each Course level you will be eligible for Certificates of Satisfactory Course Completion.

2. Certificates of Competence (for Modules 18-21)

You will be eligible for IYT professional level certificates required to work in the Yachting Industry and recognized around the globe as the pinnacle of competence for the recreational Yachtsperson if you:

  • Achieve the necessary prerequisites for course entry, and

  • Successfully complete the necessary course modules, and

  • Are formally examined and achieve the necessary standards by a qualified IYT examiner appointed by and acting on behalf of the IYT Training Board.

The 3 Certificates of Competence are:

  1. IYT Master of Yachts 200 gt Coastal (Mate 200 gt)
  2. IYT Master of Yachts 200 gt (Limited)
  3. IYT Master of Yachts 200 gt (Unlimited)

Medical Standards

If you wish to obtain an IYT Master of Yachts Certificate you must have a medical examination. For details of the medical examination click here.
