The convention gives the minimum standards of qualifications required by all crew members at various levels depending upon vessel size. All crew involved in any safety or muster must complete the STCW95 course.
The 1995 STCW Convention establishes a baseline standard for the training and education of seafarers throughout the world. By placing an emphasis on quality control and competence-based training, it establishes a structure that can ensure not only that the required standard is met, but that it is met.
STCW 95 stipulates the required competences associated with different tasks, the knowledge and understanding required to perform them, methods for demonstrating competence and criteria for evaluating it. The Convention embodies provision for "hands-on" training and the development of basic skills through use of simulators, laboratory training equipment and other practical training aids.
Although experience at sea remains an important part of a seafarers overall career development, it is no longer be enough to "serve your time."
In 2002, the International STCW 95 convention went into full effect. Since then, all seafarers must be trained in compliance with its provisions and carry certificates to that effect. Vessels are now subject to detention and seizure for non-compliance.

You need additional training, certification and experience if you expect a captain to sign you aboard. If you lack these skills and certification, we recommend you sign up for the Megayacht Deck Crew or Megayacht Interior Crew course at the same time to be eligible for a special package price.

"I'm Joshua McCouat, I studied my STCW'95 and Megayacht deck Crew with Superyacht Crew Academy earlier this year in Feburary.
I just thought I would shoot you an email and let you know what I am up to and where in the wonderful world I am.
Since April I have been in Florida (Ft Lauderdale/Palm Beach) on a 157" Superyacht. We did the east coast of America last season and travelled from Palm Beach to The Canadian/USA Boarder stopping in Savannah, Charleston, Manhatten, The Hamptons, Newport, Nantucket, Boston, Portland, Booth Bay, Barr Habour..... Just to name a few. Then we shot back to Atlantis in the Bahamas for 2 weeks before heading to Key West and Making a Slow Cruise from there Back to Palm Beach where we have been halled out of the water for a major refit. We have been out of the water for 2 months and are due back in on the 17th of Dec to head back to Atlantis for Xmas/New Yrs before the Caribian season starts. After that we scoot across the ditch to the Med for the season there which includes the Monaco Yacht Show :)
I also wanted to say thank you for all the help and support that you gave me when i was studying with you. it was alot of fun and I will no doubt be visiting again hopefully at the end of next year when I come to do my Yacht Master OffShore.
The Boat has offered me an awsome opertunity to learn all there is is learn as well as an awesome salery, benefits, and program. not to mention the crew are a happy bunch of people and we are like a large family.... I have learned that the crew makes the boat and that is the main thing, not the salery, benefits or program.
